Dr. Karin Scarpinato on Research at Florida Atlantic University (FAU)

Weekly Meeting January 22, 2020

Pictured above are Club President Vanessa Havener with Dr. Karin Scarpinato, Senior Associate Vice President, Division of Research, Florida Atlantic University (FAU).

Dr. Scarpinato is a molecular geneticist by training and helps lead the growing research program at FAU. She came to FAU from the University of Miami (UM) where she served as the assistant provost for research.

She manages a team of over 100 employees to provide support for the FAU research needs. For example, she has enabled growth in the Division of Research by holding workshops for faculty on the cusp of writing grants. It is her goal to provide these faculty members with support to guide them through the grant-writing process. She has set up writing bootcamps that are eight-10 weeks long. These bootcamps introduce young faculty to the basics of grant writing and serve as a refresher for those faculty members who wish to get back into writing grants.

Here is an example of the research being done in artificial intelligence, sensors and smart systems – a teamwork approach.

FAU has also become a leader in research associated with the environment, particularly as it relates to the algae bloom or ‘red tide’ problem.

Thanks to Dr. Scarpinato for her interesting presentation on the important research being conducted in the Club’s backdoor. Anyone interested in wanting to find out more information or become a donor to one of the many programs at FAU can contact Karin at 561-297-3461 or [email protected].
