We had a special meeting this week with Club members Rachel Huerta, ARPN and John Strasswimmer, MD, Ph.D. Rachel runs Direct Primary Care of Boca Raton and handles most medical issues not requiring a specialist. John and his partner own Strasswimmer & Smirnov Dematology in Delray Beach. John is Board Certified in Mohs procedures.  John and Rachel provided answers to questions posed by the Club members about the terrible novel coronavirus and resulting Covid-19 disease that develops. The Club was honored to have Ralph de la Vega as its guest speaker on July 1, 2020. Ralph is the past Vice Chairman of AT&T. He relocated from Dallas to Boca Raton following his retirement.  Ralph shared a moving story of how he immigrated from Cuba at the US at age 10. When Castro took power and nationalized all businesses and industry, his family decided to leave Cuba and immigrate to the US. Rotary Scholarship Recipient Rosa Barbosa Receives Degree

Andrea O'Rourke's mentee Rosa Barbosa just received her AA degree from Palm Beach State thanks to the help of the Rotary Club of Boca Raton. John Smarge Regarding the Rotary Sponsored HANWASH Program in Haiti

The Club was honored to have John Smarge of the Rotary Club of Naples speak about the Rotary sponsored HANWASH program in Haiti (along with others shown above). John explained that the problem with donation-based single water programs is that it only distracts from building a sustainable clean water system for the whole country.    Instead, Rotary and a number of other organizations have created the Haiti National Clean Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Strategy with the acronym HANWASH. Barry is a member of the Rotary Club of East Nassau, New Providence in the Bahamas.    Rassin earned an MBA in health and hospital administration from the University of Florida and is the first fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives in the Bahamas. OPAL Honoree John Ellsworth Shuff Has Passed

The Rotary Club of Boca Raton is sad to announce that OPAL Honoree John Ellsworth Shuff passed away this past Monday, June 29, 2020 in Boca Raton, after complications from surgery. His wife, Margaret Mary Shuff, was by his side—as she has been for the last 57 years. After being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1975, John and Margaret relocated from Manhattan to flourishing Boca Raton and launched JES Publishing and the now familiar Boca Raton magazine. Rotary Scholarship Grant to Palm Beach State College to Underwrite Special Vocational Careers

The Club Board recently decided to provide designated support at Palm Beach State College (PBSC) for three vocational programs:   •                     Heating and AC (HVAC) •                     Marine Serving Technology •                     Auto Mechanic   This designated grant is part of the Club’s overall grant supporting new and continuing students.
