We were delighted to have Vytas Reid be our guest speaker this week. Vytas is the new Emmy award-winning Chief Meteorologist for the award-winning CBS 12 News at 5, 5:30, and 11 pm newscast. He is new to Florida, coming from Baltimore, Maryland, and is looking forward to connecting with the CBS 12 community.
Previously he was Chief Meteorologist for WBFF FOX 45 in Baltimore for 15 years. Before that Vytas worked at Sinclair Broadcast Group’s News Central weather operations in Maryland which produced weather forecasts for several television markets across the country.
Vytas holds a degree in Broadcast Communications from Indiana University and a Certificate in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University. He has also been awarded the seal of approval from the American Meteorological Society and is a current standing member of the National Weather Association. He is proud to serve currently on the Diversity Committee for the NWA.
One of Vytas’s hobbies is to DJ music, mixing tunes from House music to R&B, to popular dance music to get you moving!!! Vytas loves being involved with weather education and sharing how the weather works, through weather presentations at schools in the area.
Notes from Vytas’ Talk
  • The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Admin (NOAA) says that there are, on average, 14 major tropical storms each summer and fall with 7 developing into hurricanes and 3 making landfall.
  • This year they forecast 17 tropical storms with 8 developing into hurricanes and 4 making landfall.
  • Normally, there is a 43% chance of one of the hurricanes making landfall while this year the likelihood is up to 60%.
  • They are returning to using more traditional names (vs. Greek mythology) and will start with Anna and end with Wanda.
  • Vytas also shared a day in his life and how he does on-air gigs (mostly by memory!).
