The Club was delighted to have David Chaves Lopez as our guest speaker this week.
David Chaves Lopez is the Bilingual Program Manager for the Southeast Florida Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association in Palm Beach County, Florida. David has a professional background in clinical research, human services and public health.
David’s role as a Program Manager is to provide Alzheimer’s Association programs and services to communities, organizations, businesses, professionals, families and individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease or any other type of dementia. Through the coordination of dedicated Alzheimer’s Association volunteers, David raises awareness about brain health, informs the public about dementia and makes known the many free programs and services that are available.
David discussed the history of Alzheimer’s disease, a major form of Dementia. The most significant risk factor for Alzheimer’s is age but genetics and family history also play a major role. Hispanics and African Americans have a higher risk of Alzheimer’s.
There is a lot of research into the causes and treatments of Alzheimer’s, and Rotary has initiated a number of grants in this important area. A copy of David’s presentation is attached for those who were unable to attend the meeting.
